Beware of HMRC Tax Scams
HMRC has issued a warning to Self Assessment taxpayers to be vigilant about tax scams. Criminals use emails, phone calls and text messages to try to steal money or personal information by impersonating HMRC, particularly around the Self Assessment deadline.
Important: HMRC will never contact you by email, text message or phone to tell you about a tax refund or ask for personal or financial information. If you receive such a message, it is a scam.
Common HMRC Scams to Watch For
Phishing Emails
Fake emails claiming you are due a tax refund, asking you to click a link and enter your bank details. HMRC will never notify you of a refund by email.
Phone Calls
Automated or live calls threatening arrest if you do not pay immediately. HMRC will never threaten you in this way or demand immediate payment over the phone.
Text Messages
SMS messages with links to fake HMRC websites. These often claim you are owed a refund or that there is a problem with your tax account.
Fake Websites
Websites designed to look like HMRC that capture your login credentials or bank details. Always check the URL starts with gov.uk.
How to Protect Yourself
- Never click links in emails or texts claiming to be from HMRC
- Log in to your HMRC account directly through gov.uk to check any correspondence
- Forward suspicious emails to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk
- Report suspicious phone calls to HMRC on 0300 200 3300
- Use a reputable accountant or bookkeeper to handle your tax affairs
